Abstract

Comic is a media to express creative writing that contains stories in a livelier way. This media supplies the writer to express the story through picture and text. So, it gives different sense to readers and makes them easier to understand the story. Therefore, the object of this undergraduate thesis is Spiderman Death and Destiny comics which is focusing on study of onomatopoeia. The aims of this research are to find out the origins of onomatopoeias, conceptual and thematic meanings of onomatopoeias, and the types of onomatopoeias in Spiderman Death and Destiny comics. This research applied descriptive qualitative method with study case approach. The theories used in this research are theory of origin of language by Yule to answer the origin of onomatopoeia, theory of meaning by Leech to answer conceptual and thematic meaning of onomatopoeia, and theory of onomatopoeia by Bredin to answer the types of onomatopoeia. There are twenty three onomatopoeia applied in Spiderman Death and Destiny comics. However, there are only seventeen origins of onomatopoeias that can be analyzed. Furthermore, those onomatopoeias are divided into seventeen direct onomatopoeias and six associative onomatopoeias. The researcher concluded that the origins of onomatopoeias can be used as references to determine the meaning of onomatopoeia. The conceptual meaning of onomatopoeia can be analyzed from the origins of onomatopoeias, and thematic meaning of onomatopoeia is how the author convey the onomatopoeia to the reader of the comics. Moreover, the onomatopoeias which are from imitation of natural sounds can be automatically included as direct onomatopoeia, and other types are determined from their meaning.
