Abstract

This research is about translation study. The objectives of the research are (1) to find out the category of cultural words in the novel of Negeri 5 Menara and its English translation The Land of Five Towers, (2) to analyze the translation procedures in The Land of Five Towers. This study uses the theory of categories of cultural words and translation procedures proposed by Newmark. The research uses descriptive qualitative method in order to conducting the objectives of the research. The data were collected by using steps from documentation technique, and were analyzed descriptively by using steps reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The results reveal two things: a) the 65 cultural words were categorized into five categories consisting of ecology (6), material culture (24), social culture (12), organization, custom, ideas (22), and gestures and habits (1). The data show that the result of material culture is mostly mentioned. Material culture is part of the culture that cannot be separated, because it comprises food, clothes, house, transportation, tools and equipment that are often found in everyday life, and b) the translation procedure used by the translator are transference (13), cultural equivalent (15), neutralization (11), literal translation (16), naturalization (1), componential analysis (3), and paraphrase (6). The procedure mostly used by the translator is literal translation. It is because the translator wants to translate the target language without any significant changes to the cultural words, and also want to preserve the context of cultural in source language.
