Abstract

American romantic poetry is the poetry of the Romantic era, a period in which artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement developed in America around the eighteenth century. As romantic poetry in general, American romantic poetry also refers to imagination, individuality, and transcendental relationships that can be built between human, nature, and God to create harmony. Then, the topic of nature becomes an interesting discussion, because nature has its own philosophical side. This research tries to decipher the elements about nature and the meaning behind it. Therefore, the writer takes Walt Whitman’s pastoral poem When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom, as the object of the research. In analyzing the two problems raised in the research, the writer uses Nature theory from Ralph Waldo Emerson. This theory classifies nature according to its uses namely; nature as Commodity, nature as Beauty, nature as Language, and nature as Discipline. The problem of this research is focused on two things. First, the natural objects contained in the poem represent the four uses of nature. Second, the meaning of the cycle of life and death in the poem that appears through the four uses of nature. Based on the theory chosen, this research will take a mimetic and expressive approach. Two different approaches, in which mimetics analyze literary works based on the set of works, which are replicas of life. While expressive based on the author, which becomes a tool to find out Whitman’s mindset in creating the poem. This research produced two things. First, the natural objects in When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d represent the four uses of nature such as Commodity, Beauty, Language, and Discipline. Second, there is the meaning of the cycle of life and death through the depiction of these natural objects, which make people aware of the forces of nature, and the essence that created nature; God.
