Abstract

Writing is a complex process. In writing, EFL students tend to make errors especially in Grammar. One of the Grammar elements which they still have errors in is prepositions. If the usage of preposition is identified as an error, the students’ written output becomes grammatically incorrect. Meanwhile, the correct grammar is one of the elements of writing as a product which is needed by a writer. This phenomenon puts the preposition errors as the focus in this present study. The present study aims to (1) describe the types of preposition errors frequently committed by students of English Education Department, (2) identify the sources of preposition errors committed by the students, and (3) find out the students’ problems in using prepositions perceived by the students. Furthermore, this study used a qualitative case study as the method. The data were collected from document analysis and questionnaire. The study involved twenty-four participants who were selected based on purposeful sampling. The result of this present study revealed three types of errors in prepositions. The types of errors which were found in the students’ writing projects were addition, omission, and selection. In this case, the most frequently committed preposition error in writing was selection (84.85%), followed by omission (12.12%), and addition (3.03%). Further, in the explanation of errors, three sources of preposition errors were revealed. The sources of the students’ preposition errors were intralingual errors (51.52%), interlingual errors (42.42%), and unique errors (6.06%). Furthermore, the analysis of the students’ problems in using prepositions perceived by the students showed that they have a difficulty to apply correct prepositions appropriately, they do not comprehend the rules of prepositions yet, and the most troublesome types of the preposition for them are space and time. In conclusion, the students need more practice in writing and preposition usage to decrease the occurrences of errors.
