Abstract

Every literary works has both content and form. This happens to the genre of poetry, as well which comprises various forms of poem. Among this form, lyric is one of genre of poem. Lyric is a poem that usually accompanied with music which sung by person or band. Alter Bridge is the one of many rock-alternative bands. It is different from common rock music which brings the themes of lyric about social or political emphasis and musically use electric instrument. Rock alternative still uses electric instrument but the themes stress is romantic especially about love. Based on this consideration, the problem of this research focuses on two matters; they are (1) the words and the meanings that represent human love in Alter Bridge selected lyrics, and (2) the plots, the characters, and the settings in Alter Bridge selected lyrics. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to describe and identifies the human love. The data taken from Alter Bridge selected lyric and analyzed to answer the first and the second questions based on C.S Pierce’s theory. To answer first question, this research uses the table and classified the representament into a few object and explain the interpretant based on the repesentament and object. And to answer the second question, this research also uses the table to find the plots, settings, and characters in every single lyric. The result of the analysis shows that Alter Bridge lyrics represent the human love by using representament, object, and interpretant. It contains about happiness, motivation, hope, worries, sadness, and resignation. Furthermore, there are the characters, plots, and settings which support to describe the meaning in every single lyric. In analyzing the human love in lyric, this research uses Peirce’s theory to analyze, it is finding a representament, finding an object, and finding interpretant. This research also uses the element of poetry to support the analysis to find the meaning: characters, plot, and setting. These were found in the lyric that represent the human love such as you’re part of me represent thanks-giving, I tried to carry you and make you whole represent an attention, I want to love represent a hope, stand up and fight for resolve represent a motivation.
