Abstract

This thesis presents politeness strategy conducted by the characters of “Maleficent” Movie. Furthermore, the writer has two research problems. Those are, What politeness strategies are used by the characters in conversation of “Maleficent” movie and What factors influence the characters to apply those strategies in “Maleficent” movie. Since the research that the writer conducts is a textual analysis, this research can be categorized as a qualitative research. The theoretical framework used as an equipment to manage the data of this study is the particular theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) concerning with politeness strategy. The data analyzed in this research are taken from “Maleficent” movie script which contain of politeness strategies. The result of this study shows that the most dominant characters used is positive politeness strategy and the most influencing factors the characters applied politeness are payoff and relevance circumstances; social distance.
