Abstract
In sociolinguistic, humor is differentiated into three theories such as Disparagement, Incongruity and Release. Besides, humor has two concepts to supports the humor form. They are Wit and Irony. Humor is a quintessentially social phenomenon. Jokes and other humorous utterances are a form of communication that is usually shared in social interaction. Humor is the variety of language in social interaction to make people feel comfortable when they interact with each other. Humor happens every time, not only in their daily interaction but also in narrative stories like short stories. Based on these phenomena, this research discusses two major concerns. First, it discusses about how the humor formed in the text of story based on the three theories and second, what the concept of humor is in the story. This research used qualitative approach with descriptive method. The primary data were collected from four stories in The Best American Humorous Short Stories. The humor form based on theories of humor and the concepts of humor are categorized by Ermida in “The Language of Comic Narratives: Humor Construction in Short Stories.” The result of this research that humor in The Best American Humorous Short Stories is formed by three theories, Disparagement, Incongruity and Release. Besides, the humor is also supported by conceptual of humor, Wit and Irony. The humors in these stories are mostly formed by the sarcastic words, the mocking words and the insulting words.
