Abstract

This research is intended to analyze lexical meaning and contextual meaning in Bring Me The Horizon selected songs in Sempiternal album Lexical meaning refers to the sense of a word as it appears in dictionary. Meanwhile contextual meaning refers to linguistic environment of a language item, as well as situational, involving extra linguistic elements that contribute to the construction of meaning. In this research, qualitative descriptive is applied to analyze the data due to its relevance with the objective of this research. The data of this research is the words, phrases, and/ or sentences of the songs lyrics regarded to have both lexical and contextual meaning. Meanwhile the source data is consisting of seven songs from sempiternal album. The result of the analysis showed that lexical meaning found in the lyrics covered denotation, conotation, sense relation, grammatical meaning, lexical ambiguity, and sentence meaning. Meanwhile the contextual meaning which refers to the singer personal life is written implied in each lyrics. The theme of the songs are self-reflective theme toward belief in God and love. The changes of meaning in each lines of the lyrics occured as the lyrics dicussed about different context. Consequently, it leads to the appearance of lexical ambiguity as it arised when a single word has more than one meaning. Meanwhile, the result of this research is expected will be useful for the other researchers who are eager to know more about lexical and contextual meaning in semantics.
