Abstract

ENGLISH : This research aims to find fulfillment desire through symbols that appear in the three main characters in the novel A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin using the interpretation of dream from Sigmund Freud. This research has two statement of problem that are the focus of this research; 1) What kind of desire symbols revealed in the characters’ dream in the novel? What are the meaning of the dream symbols relate to their desire fulfillment of the characters in the novel? Psychoanalysis is a flow of psychology that developed by Sigmund Freud in the 1890s and makes the unconscious mind as the focus of his theory. This happens as a form of Freud treatment in treating patients who have mental disorders. This treatment makes the subconscious mind the main focus in curing mental disorders experienced by patients using interpretation of dream. Freud argued that dreams as fulfillment desire stem from unfulfilled desire in the subconscious mind. Therefore, the interpretation of dreams becomes Freud's way of knowing the mental disorders experienced by his patients and provides an explanation of the fulfillment of the expectations contained therein. As a research critique of literature the approach used in this study is a psychological approach that approaches the writer, literary work, and the reader. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This research analyzes the dreams of three main characters namely Bran Stark, Jon Snow, and Daenerys in the novel A Game of Thrones. Using Sigmund Freud's interpretation of dream theory, psychological approaches and qualitative descriptive methods produce symbols of desires that appear in dreams classified into three types; wish fulfillment, sexuality, and the realization of fear. These three classifications of desire symbol appear in each character's dream. And the meaning of each symbol that appears indicates the fulfillment desire of each character in each classification of the desire symbol. INDONESIA : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan pemenuhan harapan melalui simbol yang muncul didalam tiga karakter utama dalam novel A Game of Thrones karya George R. R. Martin dengan menggunakan teori interpretasi mimpi dari Sigmund Freud. Penelitian ini memiliki dua rumusan masalah yang menjadi fokus dalam penelitian ini yaitu; 1) Simbol hasrat seperti apa yang muncul pada mimpi karakter utama dalam novel? 2) Apa arti dari simbol mimpi yang menunjukkan pemenuhan harapan karakter dalam novel? Psikoanalisis adalah aliran psikologi yang dikembangkan oleh Sigmund Freud pada tahun 1890-an dan menjadikan pikiran bawah sadar sebagai fokus teorinya. Hal ini terjadi sebagai bentuk pengobatan Freud dalam mengobati pasiennya yang memiliki gangguan mental. Pengobatan ini menjadikan pikiran bawah sadar sebagai fokus utama dalam menyembuhkan gangguan mental yang dialami pasiennya dengan menggunakan cara interpretasi mimpi. Freud berpendapat bahwa mimpi sebagai pemenuhan harapan yang berasal dari harapan yang tidak terpenuhi di dalam pikiran bawah sadar. Oleh karena itu, interpretasi mimpi menjadi cara Freud untuk mengetahui gangguan mental yang dialami pasiennya dan memberikan penjelasan mengenai pemenuhan harapan yang terkandung di dalamnya. Sebagai penelitian kritik sastra pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan psikologis yang melakukan pendekatan terhadap penulis, karya sastra, dan pembaca. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini menganalisis mimpi dari tiga karakter utama yaitu Bran Stark, Jon Snow, dan Daenerys pada novel A Game of Thrones. Menggunakan teori interpretasi mimpi Sigmund Freud, pendekatan psikologis, dan metode kualitatif deskriptif menghasilkan simbol hasrat yang muncul dalam mimpi diklasifikasikan menjadi tiga macam yaitu; pemenuhan harapan, seksualitas, dan realisasi ketakutan. Tiga klasifikasi simbol hasrat ini muncul pada mimpi setiap karakter. Dan arti dari setiap simbol yang muncul menunjukkan pemenuhan hasrat dari setiap karakter pada tiap klasifikasi simbol hasrat tersebut.
