Abstract

Language is the important tool for all societies of human beings. Human needs languages to communicate, to interact and to get information from other people. By using language, human become exists in social interaction. Language is not only used in daily communication but also exists in a song. In a song, there are many sentences with figurative language elements inside, such as metaphor. To know the meaning of metaphor, needed the theory. Based on the background of this research, the writer has two questions in this research 1) What kinds of metaphor are found of Islamic English song’s lyrics from Sami Yusuf and Maher Zain? 2) What are the contextual meanings of each metaphor found in the lyric of Islamic English song’s lyrics from Sami Yusuf and Maher Zain? In this research, the writer uses two main theories. Those are the theory of metaphor and the theory of meaning. The theory about metaphor is taken from Peter Newmark’s and the theory about meaning is taken from Abdul Chaer. The writer uses qualitative method to analyze the data. The data which used in this research is from the songs of Sami Yusuf and Maher Zain. To analyze the data, the writer has three steps; 1) Classifying the metaphors into the more specific categories based on Newmark's theory; 2) interpreting and giving explanation the meaning of each metaphor based on Abdul Chaer's theory; 3) making a conclusion and a research report. Finally, the writer found 40 metaphor sentences from four types of metaphor. Those are 27/67.5% dead metaphor; 4/10% cliché metaphor; 6/15% stock metaphor; 3/7.5% original metaphor. Four contextual meanings of the songs also found in this research. Those are 20 sentences or 50% for context the greatness of Allah, 7 sentences or 17.5% for context repent to Allah, 8 sentences or 20% for context loving to prophet Muhammad and 5 sentences or 12.5% for context spirit of life.
