Abstract
British and American English are two main varieties of English in the world. There are similarities and differences of phonetic transcription between both languages. Phonetic transcription tells how the word has to be pronounced, and it is written based on International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) where each and every English alphabet has its own symbol. Phonetics is used as the theory to analyze the similarities and differences of phonetic transcription between British and American English in terms of vowels and consonants. Comparative method is a linguistic method used to compare two or more languages. Comparative analysis is used to compare the data in this research. The data is the phonetic transcription between British and American English in Robert Frost’s poems. It is analyzed by comparing the vowels, such as the front-back dimension, high-low dimension, and lip position. Also consonants, such as place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing. The result shows that there are similarities of phonetic transcription between British and American English in Robert Frost’s poems, such as vowels in the front-back and high-low dimension. The high and front vowels /ɪ/ and /iː/ are unrounded, the back vowels /ʊ/ an /uː/ are rounded, the mid and central vowels /ə/ and /ʌ/ unrounded, in the low vowel /ɑː/ unrounded, and the diphthongs /eɪ/ and /aɪ/. The consonants similarities, such as place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing. The differences of phonetic transcription, such as in the back vowels in British English /ɒ/ rounded, whereas in American English /ɑː/ unrounded. The triphthong /aɪə/ in British English, whereas diphthong /aɪ/ in American English. In conclusion, there are similarities and differences of phonetic transcription between British and American English in terms of vowels, such as front-back dimension, high-low dimension, and lip position. Also consonants, such as place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing.
