Abstract

Al-Qur’an is the central religious text of Islam. Muslim believes that is the book of guidance and direction for mankind. To make it easier to understand Al-Qur’an, it is translated into many languages, including English. Besides, the researcher uses al-Qur’an translation as an object of this research from Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Hilali Khan. This reseach will reveal the problems: the similarities and differences between the English translation of Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Hilali – Khan’s version in surah Al – Qiyaama. The researcher focuses on the similarities and differences of English grammar between both of translators by using the theory of translation by Newmark, the theory of English grammar by Frank, and Azar. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in conducting this research. The data are translation of surah Al-Qiyaama between Ali’s version and Khan’s version in Holy Qur’an. In analyzing the data, the researcher classified the data into two categories: first, identify the similarities and differences between two translations and second, analyze by using English grammatical by mixed the theory. The technique of analyzing data divided into classify, analyzing, and conclusing. The finding of this research shows there are similarities in 37 data in both of translation which consist of 37 pronouns, 21 prepositions, 1 adverb, 18 conjunctions, 14 auxiliaries, 1 direct- indirect object, 3 passive sentence, 19 phrases,and 23 sentence. The researcher also finds the differences in both of translations; there are 11 pronouns, 17 prepositions, 1 adverbs, 5 conjunctions, 6 auxiliaries, 1 gerund, 1 expletive, 1 active-passive sentence and 11 phrases. It can be concluded that the similarities are mostly found in pronoun, while the differences are mostly found in preposition.
