Abstract

Keywords: Deixis, Function Deixis. This study aims to analyze types of Deixis in “How to Train Your Dragon 1” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2” movie. There are two research questions: 1) What types of deixis are found in “How to Train Your Dragon 1” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2”? 2) What language functions of deixis are found in “How to Train Your Dragon 1” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2”? This study analyze deixis in movies. The author use Levinson’s theory which discusses deixis that is person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. In these movies, the writer finds types of deixis in every conversation in the character. In both films many use person deixis in conversations used by characters. To answer the research questions descriptive qualitative method is applied. Data collection was conducted by coding the two movie scripts. After identifying, classifying and interpreting collected data, it is concluded that there are five types of deixis in the two movies they are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, social deixis. The result of this study found a total of 158 data, with the details of person deixis as many as 47 data. Then, place deixis as many as 27 data, time deixis as many as 36 data, social deixis as many as 22 data, and discourse deixis as many as 26 data. Moreover even though metalingual function is not found on this data, the rest of function of deixis are found they are referential function, emotive function, conative function, phatic function and poetic function.
