Abstract

Nowadays, the phenomenon of hoax (fake news) is mostly constructed through social media. The sites that produce and spread hoaxes are fairly high in some capital cities in Indonesia, including Bandung, a capital of West Java. This fake news makes people very uneasy, moreover, it is not only consumed by common people but also the college community. The study aimed at finding out the model of spreading hoaxes to Muslim students in Islamic colleges in Bandung. This research used a qualitative approach and data were collected by conducting in-depth interviews and documentation studies to explore the focus of research. The findings showed that first, most students often receive fake news (hoaxes), even some have also been the makers and spreaders of hoaxes. Second, the distribution of hoaxes is done through social media along with the development of information technology. Third, there are three patterns of hoax distribution among Islamic colleges students: (1) cyclization (formation of circular patterns in organic compounds or connected with cycles) (2) spread (scattered) (3) breaking up (information distribution stops at authorities). In addition, it needs campus support in the practice of strengthening digital literacy, comprehensive verification efforts for students, and serious handling from government.
