Abstract
Sociolinguistics study has several terms in the languages used by the language community and one of them is language variation. Variations in language occur due to several factors, namely social level, regional differences, education, gender, and so on. One of the language variations is gender. Gender differences have an influence on differences in the language used as well. In the theory of Lakoff it explains how language is used in women. This study uses the film The Danish Girl (2015) as an object of discussion related to the theory of women's language. This study has two statements of problem, namely: 1) What are the women's languages used by Gerda Wegener in the film The Danish Girl? 2) What are the functions of women's language used by Gerda Wegener in the film The Danish Girl? This research focuses on the character of Gerda Wegener, namely as the wife of Einar Wegener. The analytical method used is a qualitative method to complete this research. The researcher uses the utterances of Gerda Wegener in the script for the film The Danish Girl to prove some of the features and functions of women's language used by Gerda Wegener. The data source used in this research is the film The Danish Girl (2015) and also the film script. The aspect of women‟s language features and functions is proven by how the sentence spoken by Gerda fulfills the requirements of Lakoff's theory. As a result of the research, the character Gerda Wegener uses many features of women's language in various situations. From all the features of women's language, Gerda Wegener's character uses seven features in her utterances, namely lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, 'empty' adjectives, intensifiers, avoidance strong swear words, 'superpolite' words, and emphatic stress. With the use of the features of women's language used, there is a function of women's language used by the character Gerda Wegener in her utterances. The most common use of women's language in Gerda Wegener's character is when she softens her utterances and occurs in different situations.
