Abstract
The cooperative principles in conversation are an indispensable assumption made by speaker and hearer when they speak to one another. The way in which people try to make conversations work with effectively and efficiently. However, because of various purposes, the principles are often flouted. Therefore, the researcher is interested in doing the research about this topic with the research questions: 1.What types of maxim of cooperative conversation are flouted by the characters in the Paddington 1&2 movies? 2. What are the effects of flouting maxim of cooperative conversation from addresser to addressee in the conversation Paddington 1&2 movies? This research used qualitative research method. The data sources in this research are the utterances among the participants which contain the flouting maxim of cooperative conversation in Paddington 1&2 movies. Further, in collecting the data the researcher arranged the conversation which can be categorized as flouting maxim of cooperative conversation to continue in analyzing its data and drawing the conclusion. The main theory used is from Grice (1975). Based on data analysis, the findings showed that the cooperative principles in conversation flouted by the characters in Paddington 1&2 movies there were 47 data which the quality principle (10 data), quantity principle (9 data), relevance principle (11 data), and manner principle (17 data). While the effects caused by each flouting cooperative conversation maxim for the hearer were confusing or being not understood (16 data), annoying (7 data), being understood (20 data), bringing happiness (3 data), and being misunderstood (1 datum). From the findings on the data analysis, the results of this research can be concluded that the flouting maxim of cooperative conversation in Paddington 1&2 movies was dominated by flouting manner maxim, this was because the participants wanted to convey their information indirectly in conversation because of some reasons, such as to influence, to defend, and to express annoyance. Meanwhile, the effects from this violation were dominated by the addressee or hearer who understood the information stated by the speaker. Thus, it means that flouting the cooperative principles in conversation does not always make the hearer get confused or get negative effect.
