Abstract

Each sign requires interpretation to determine the meaning contained therein. There are many signs that can be found in the life of the world. The word symbol means that every unit in this case is a structure of words of the literary works that related to the literary study. Furthermore, sign aspect and textual facts will be compared, contrasted and connected to build a structure, which can be understood by the reader. In literature, Frye divides symbol into four phases: literal and descriptive phase: symbol as motif and as sign, formal phase: symbol as image, mythical phase: symbol as archetype, and anagogic phase: symbol as monad. Symbol can represent human’s thing like “pants”. This research concentrates to analyze the novel as one of literary works. The object that has been chosen in this research is Ann Brashares’s novel titled The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Identifying and interpreting category of symbol of pants in the novel is the problem that will be analyzed in this research through a process that is constructed by the relevant theory. In analyzing the object of the materials, the researcher uses ethical criticism which focused the theory of symbols in Northrop Frye. Ethical criticism consists of the systemization of literary symbolism, which means that any work of literature will have multiple meanings. Ethical criticism as the method to explore the symbolism, criticism as whole in term of this definition consist of systematizing of literary symbolism. The result of this research shows the pants as symbol in this research, the outward phase as Frye’s theory, the researcher take an example from the history of pants. Pants are a clothing piece originated from pagans and were worn by migratory groups of Persians and Eurasian nomad tribes. The inward phase of symbolism, The Traveling Pants represent the girls’ friendship and the powerful, positive influence it has in all four girls’ lives. The girls are all very different, with different personalities, interests, worries, and family situations. The Pants, which fit all four girls beautifully despite their very different body shapes, demonstrate that the girls’ friendship is so strong.
