Abstract
This graduating paper examines cohesion devices in English song lyrics. Cohesion is a marker between sentences and clauses that form the integrity of discourse. The aims of this study are to find out the cohesion devices includes grammatical and lexical cohesion. In explaining this study, the researcher used the cohesion theory by Halliday and Hasan. Due to this, I then proposed two problems: 1) How is the grammatical cohesion used in songs about mother? 2) How is the lexical cohesion used in songs about mother? She used descriptive qualitative methods to find cohesion devices. In this analysis, the researcher explained the use of cohesion devices which takes songs about mother as a theme of this object to be analyzed. The data of song lyrics in this research are collected from song lyrics about mother which had been released in the 2000s. Thus, as the results that in grammatical cohesion the most dominant that used in song lyrics is reference. Reference often used in song lyrics to emphasize the meaning associated with text, because it has a reference that refers to. Meanwhile, lexical cohesion the most dominant that used in song lyrics is repetition. Repetition often used in song lyrics to emphasize that there is a message that the singer wants to convey through repetition.
