Abstract
The aims of this research are to find out the classification of illocutionary acts and find out affective meaning which implied in The Help movie script. This research uses qualitative method to describe and analyze the selected of illocutionary acts which are reading the movie script and then classifies them according to John R Searle’s concept types of illocutionary acts and find out the affective meaning implied in the utterances according to Geoffrey Leech’s concept. Technique of collecting data are (1) reading the movie script several times in order to understand the whole story (2) collecting the data, transcribing the data from the dialogue in the movie into form of table, identify the dialogue that contain types of illocutionary acts carried out by the characters (3) find out the types of illocutionary acts carried out by the characters representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. The writer uses content analysis which focus on analysing types of illocutionary acts and the affective meaning which implied in the utterances in The Help movie carried out by the characters. The results of the analysis, the writer found the answer of the research questions. The writer found that the character use all types of illocutionary acts. They are representative, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. From all of types, the writer found that directives oftenly used in The Help movie script. The commanding is the most frequent function in directives acts. The implication of this research is to give information to readers who want to increase their knowledge about illocutionary acts. Hopefully, this research can be a reference for other writers about illocutionary acts.
