Abstract

The complaint as one of the way to people express their feeling about dislike, disappointed, unhappy, dissatisfied, and sadness in the daily communication. Misinterpretation of complaint will lead someone feel dejected or more seriously is dispute. That is why people have to interpret a complaint correctly. The complaint is not only in the real life but also in the movie. Therefore, the researcher is interested in analyzing the complaint in the Breaking Dawn movie. The problems are formulated 1) What are the strategies of main character’s statement complaint speech act used in Breaking Dawn movie? 2) What are the effects of the complaint speech act in Breaking Dawn movie? This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data are the scripts from Breaking Dawn movie in part 1 and part 2. The researcher collected the data with study of document based on Jauhari (2002:135). In analyzing this research, the researcher used Trosborg’s theory about eight strategies for complaint speech act. It means that, this research attempted to know the complaint in Breaking Dawn movie based on those strategies. Furthermore, this research also analyzed the effect of the complaint is used in Breaking Dawn movie based on level of speech act by Yule (1996:30). Then, the data were analyzed based on the complaint methods. Furthermore, the data were classified based on eight strategies for analyzing complaint and the result, the complaint strategies is used by main character’s statement in the Breaking Dawn movie part 1 and part 2 just five from eight strategies those are: six indirect accusations, three hints, two modified blames, one direct accusation and one explicit blame (person). So it means that in Breaking Dawn movie is mostly used indirect accusation strategy. It is more effective strategy than other because it has enough power, polite and can avoid conflict and the effect of complaint has divided into two categories those are the weakest effect and the strongest effect. The weakest effect is given by the hint strategy because this strategy is not directly mention proposition to the hearer so the hearer is not directly know about the speaker complaint purpose and this strategy needs another complaint strategy or complaint action to get success effect but it often used by the speaker who has lower status than the hearer to avoid a conflict. The strongest effect is given by the explicit blame person strategy because this strategy is explicitly states that the hearer as a non responsible social member so the hearer can directly know the speaker complaint purpose but it seldom used by the speaker because can make the hearer feel uncomfortable or a conflict and it is for the last choice if the all strategies are not success.
