Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of sentence patterns syntactically in the English subtitles of the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017). This study aims to examine two main problems, namely: 1). How are the constructions of compound and complex sentences formed in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie, 2). How are the sentence function structured in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Diana D. Bornstein's tree diagram theory to analyze syntactic elements. The results showed that from 15 compound sentences, the researcher found 15 sentences with each sentence having 2 independent clauses, and overall the coordinative conjunctions were found to be a liaison between the independent clauses, the conjunctions were: and, and, and, so, and, and, and, so, or, and, but, but, and so, and so. Meanwhile, from 15 complex sentences, the researcher found that there were 2 variations of sentences that were structurally different; the first is 'Konj + S + V, + S + V' and the second is 'S + V + Konj + S + V'. Furthermore, from the 15 complex sentences studied, there are also subordinative conjunctions as follows: Whatever, as, where, if, that, when, that, when, if, that, that, if, where, when, and when. Then in this study, the researcher found 3 types of sentence functions, namely declarative sentences, imperative sentences, and exclamative sentences. In the discussion of declarative sentences, the researcher analyzed five sentences which are ordinary expressions of speakers consisting of subjects and predicates that follow the subject. Second, in the discussion of imperative sentences, there are several variations of imperative sentences which include warnings, suggestions, and commands. Furthermore, in the exclamative sentence analysis, the researcher only found 2 exclamative sentences. First, the sentence begins with the word 'what' and the structure is 'what + an + adjective + singular' and the second, the sentence begins with the word 'how' with the structure is 'how + adjective + S + V'. These two exclamative sentences have a function as expressions of the speaker's amazement.
