Abstract
Grammar is a set of rules that serve to form a correct and precise sentence. This grammar is also used in every language, not only English. Grammar is important for making sentences perfectly. However, many issues circulating that grammar is no longer important because the most important thing is that our message is conveyed. There are also those who believe that grammar is always important because the meaning of a sentence can change because of grammar, until now, grammar is still studied at various levels of education from elementary to college. However, grammar is not an easy subject. Various studies prove that grammar is complicated to learn; in this case, student interest has a big influence on student learning process. With interest, the students can enjoy the learning process because interest is an impulse that comes from within a person, where someone can be attracted to something without coercion. This research is aimed: (1) to describe the students’ interest in learning English grammar, and (2) to find out the factors that affect students’ interest in learning English grammar. This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method and survey design. The data was obtained from the questionnaire and interview. It was conducted in the third, fifth, and seventh semester of English Education Department students. The participants of this research were 192 students for the questionnaire and 8 students for the interview. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of students’ responses in questionnaire and interview. The result of this research shows that a description of students’ interest is in medium interest. It means the English Education Department (EED) students are at good enough level with 52,6% of neutral responses. Also, there are three factors that affect students interest (Crow, 1963, p. 159) as follows: inner urges, social motives, and emotional factors. On the interview, the inner urges are found such as they want to improve the grammar score, they need to know grammar in deep, they want to be able to analyze essays, etc.; the social motives are found such as the importance of role of lecturers, parents, other people, learning facilities and infrastructure, and their social environment; and emotional factors are found such as how much satisfaction and their feeling affects their interest in learning grammar. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that 101 of 192 EED students are uncertain about their interest feeling towards English grammar. Moreover, those factors have enough impact towards students’ interest on grammar courses. This research is recommended for those who want to build or develop interest in students.
