Abstract
Hard-boiled detective films will never be separated from the depiction of masculinity aspect. However, the representation of masculinity always changes based on the cultural aspects that developed for over years. Unconsciously, that is what makes hard-boiled detective films so popular in western fiction. Because, the construction of masculinity in hard-boiled detective films was always adjusted to the cultural aspects that are present at that time. In this study, writer will uncover the myths of masculinity that are always constructed in hard-boiled detective films. To complete this research, writer took two films as primary data sources. The first data is Polanski’s Chinatown, and the second is Howard’s The Da Vinci Code. Both films were famous films of their time, Chinatown was a famous detective film in 1974 and The Da Vinci Code was also a famous film in 2006. This is the reason why writer took the two films as the source of data for this research. Therefore, in this study, writer intends to analyze the myths of masculinity in two films which have a high level of popularity with their depiction of masculinity aspects. Not only analyzing the construction of it, but also compare it by using comparative literature theory. Thus, this study is designed as a literary criticism that used the comparative literature method. In addition, writer also used qualitative research methods and descriptive methods. The results of this study indicate that the depiction of masculinity aspects in hard-boiled detective films is always influenced by the ideals of masculinity changes in western culture. Although the masculinity-building aspects of the Chinatown film and The Da Vinci Code film were different, it still gives the conclusion that hard-boiled detective films have a depiction of masculinity traits in their characters. However, this study also shows that there are some similarities in the masculine aspects of the two films published in 1974 and 2006 with different cultural influences. So in the end, writer make this as the core of the myths of masculinity in hard-boiled detective films. The myths of masculinity itself are domination, violence, intellectual ability and toughness.
