Abstract

The term about everything in the world created in pairs is familiar. A pair is identical with the opposite or different, such as the meaning of the word good and bad. In life, the views of good and bad are explained in black and white in several religions such as Christianity and Islam, represented by the creation of angels and devils. Angels are creatures who obey and submit to God while devils are the opposite. In this research, researchers focused on the existence of demonic or satanic in drama The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and short story Langit Makin Mendung. In literary works, we recognize the antagonist character as a character who acts or commits a crime. The form of the antagonist characters is quite diverse, including in the form of demon, devil and Satan. The existence of demons, devils or Satan in the object of this research comes from different religious views and genres. The differences are also seen in how the authors write their works. Based on this explanation, the research finally looked for similarities or resemblance between two research objects. The researcher uses the descriptive analysis method by Ratna (2004) and the comparative literature by Bassnet (2004) as research method. The results of this research indicate there are resemblances in intrinsic, extrinsic and literary devices elements that have demonic and satanic characteristic in each objects. The religious views in each story refer to a literary device, namely allusion, which is also a resemblance between two objects. Afterwards, the last resemblance come from the pattern of how the story uses demonic or satanic characteristic as a meaning of criticizing something. Istilah tentang semua yang ada di dunia ini diciptakan berpasang-pasangan sudahlah tidak asing lagi. Bepasangan identik dengan hal yang sebaliknya atau berbeda seperti arti kata baik dan buruk. Dalam kehidupan, pandangan tentang baik dan buruk dijelaskan secara hitam putih dalam beberapa agama seperti Kristen dan Islam dengan diwakilkan oleh terciptanya Malaikat dan Iblis. Malaikat adalah makhluk yang patuh dan tunduk kepada Tuhan sedangkan Iblis sebaliknya. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti berfokus pada eksistensi demonic atau satanic dalam drama The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus dan cerita pendek Langit Makin Mendung sebagai objek penelitian. Dalam karya sastra, kita mengenal karakter antagonist sebagai tokoh jahat. Bentuk dari karakter antagonist cukup beragam tak terkecuali dalam bentuk demon, devil and Satan. Keberadaan demon, devil atau Satan dalam objek penelitian ini datang dari pandangan agama dan genre yang berbeda. Perbedaan juga tentu, terihat dari bagaimana penulis menulis karya mereka. Dari penjelasan inilah, penelitian akhirnya mencari persamaan dalam kedua objek tersebut. Menggunkan metode deskriptif analisis oleh Ratna (2004) dan literatur komparatif oleh Bassnet (2004). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan adanya persamaan dari elemen intrisik, extrinsik dan perngkat sastra yang memiliki ciri demonic and satanic. Penggunaan pandangan agama dalam masing-masing cerita merujuk pada sebuah perangkat sastra yaitu Allusion yang juga menjadi salah satu kemiripan di antara kedua object. Setelah itu, kemiripan terakhir datang dari pola bagaimana cerita tersebut menggunakan ciri demonic atau satanic sebagaisarana untuk mengkritik sesuatu.
