Abstract

Humans use language to communicate with each other. In order for this communication going well and easily understood by the hearer, the speaker must make assumptions related what they will said, in order to understood by the hearer. This is called a presupposition. This research discusses the presupposition used by the main characters in the Aladdin 2019 movie script. The problems in this research are first, what presupposed in the main character’s utterance and what structure linguistic embodies this? Second, what are the types of those presupposition in relation to their linguistic features? The objectives of this research are: (1) To find out the presupposed in the main characters utterance in Aladdin 2019 movie and linguistic structure embodies this. (2) To find out the types of presupposition in relation to their linguistic features in Aladdin 2019 movie script. The researcher uses Grundy theory to determine the linguistic structure used by the main characters. Then, the resulting linguistic structures are classified into the types of pesupposition using Yule's theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method because the form of data in this study is movie script. Several steps for analyzing the data are identifying, classifying, describing and making conclusions. In conclusion, from the nine linguistic structures according to Grundy, the researcher found eight structures, are iterative, temporal clause, change state of verb, cleft, counterfactual conditionals, stress, implicative and focus and presupposition. There are 41 expressions of linguistic structure used by the main characters in Aladdin 2019 movie script. Then after the data is classified, the authors found five types of presupposition according to Yule, namely existential presupposition, factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition and counterfactual presupposition.
