Abstract

Film as a discourse is able to form impressions about the character, history, and culture of a nation. The history of Japanese modernization is filled with radical changes that affect the fate of the samurai and the Japanese nation as a whole so that Japan is able to achieve its progress to date. An inaccurate picture of this change can trigger a false understanding of the events of the samurai rebellion and the role of the American nation in the process of modernization that took place in Japan in the 19th century. For this reason the aim of this research is to find out the representation of the American people and the Japanese nation in relation to the history of Japanese modernization. The Last Samurai film is described syntagmatically at the level of reality and the level of representation. While the level of ideological decomposition uses paradigmatic analysis. The Last Samurai film describes a series of conflicts that arise when a nation is carrying out modernization. The concept of traditionality and modernity is used to distinguish each party in conflict. Through this research, it was found that The Last Samurai contained Max Weber's thoughts on the rationality of modern people who distinguish them from traditional people. This film is an application of orientalism as a discourse made by Westerners to evaluate or explain Eastern culture, Eastern history, and Eastern people. The Last Samurai explicitly pays homage to traditional Eastern culture but still contains the supremacy of the West which is shown not only through the image of the West but also through the image of the East person itself.
