Abstract
The return of Habib Rizieq Shihab (HRS) to Indonesia became the headline news of news media both in Indonesia and worldwide. After his exile in Saudi Arabia for three years, HRS, who has a significant influence in this country, finally returned in the resurgence of Islamic politics. The wide-spreading news about the cleric's return became an example of social and political power, which is highly prioritized by news media; one of them is The Jakarta Post which keeps updating the news about the figure. Since the media have a solid power to influence its readers, this research is aimed to see how The Jakarta Post portrays HRS and what ideological standpoint reflects in the news article. Fairclough’s Three Dimensional Framework and Halliday’s Transitivity system are used to analyze 70 data collected from 9 articles through three stages; description, interpretation, and explanation stage. At the same time, the Transitivity analysis becomes a part of the description stage. Using the descriptive-qualitative method, this research showed that material and verbal processes become the most dominant process used in the articles, which means the media represents HRS as a figure who is courageous to initiate movements in defending Islam and brave to speak up when he sees something goes in the wrong way. In addition, as a pro-democratic media, The Jakarta Post gives the impression to support the imprisonment of HRS as he is a part of citizens so that he must obey the law. However, the media positions itself as unbiased as possible.
