Abstract
Grammatical cohesion is the realization of cohesion through grammar. This is used in spoken and written discourses to unite every element in the text and can be meaningful. Therefore, the writer is interested in conducting research on this topic with research questions: 1. What grammatical cohesion devices are employed in Viral Lies: Misinformation and the Coronavirus article? 2. How grammatical cohesion devices build the topic of Viral Lies: Misinformation and the Coronavirus article? This research used qualitative method. The writer applied the theory of grammatical cohesion by Halliday and Hasan (1976) to support in conducting this study. Data were collected through documentation. Miles and Huberman's model used to analyze research data through several steps, such as data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result showed that there are 397 grammatical cohesion devices employed in Viral Lies: Misinformation and the Coronavirus article: 92 references, 15 ellipses, and 290 conjunctions. Then, grammatical cohesion devices built the topic of the text by the relationship of each element in the sentence created by reference, ellipsis, and conjunction. Reference was used to refer to the topic discussed, either after or previously mentioned in the text. Ellipsis omitted the topic already mentioned before in the text. Conjunction added more information, made different arguments to the topic, and showed how the meaning related in each sentence. The writer concluded that there are three kinds of grammatical cohesion devices: reference, ellipsis, and conjunction. Then, the integrity and cohesion formed by grammatical cohesion devices create the focus of discussion or topic and make readers easier to understand the meaning of the text.
