Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the characteristics of science fiction genre similarities between 2001 : A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars : A New Hope (1977), and Wall-E (2008). There are Statements of Problem that formulated in this study; 1. What sci-fi genre characteristics are used in 2001 : A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars : A New Hope (1977), and Wall-E (2008)? 2. What similarties of sci-fi genre characteristics are there in 2001 : A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars : A New Hope (1977), and Wall-E (2008)? This research is use Jane Stokes theory about six categories of genre characteristics as the theory foundation, such as setting, location, iconography, narrative events, characters, and plot structure. As the methodology of this research, researcher used qualitative descriptive to analyze data that collected from the three films and comparative research to comparing the data and find several similarities variables. The results of this study show the characteristics of science fiction genre and the similarities between the three films. There are genre characteristics from the three films that found according to Jane Stokes theory; 1. Setting, 2. Location, 3. Iconography, 4. Narrative events, 5. Characters, 6. Plot. Each films have their own characteristics in cinematics, scoring music, etc. However, in the elements of science fiction genre, there are the similarities and form the connection between the three films by the characteristics mentioned above from Jane Stoke’s theory of the six categories of genre characteristics.
