Abstract
The research describes the choice of words used by the composer of world cup’s official song lyrics to show the expression of celebration and spirit. The song lyrics selected are the world cup’s official song lyrics from 1998-2010. The problems in this research are formulated into two questions: (1) What is more dominant between the expression of celebration and the expression of spirit in World’s cup official song lyrics? (2) What are the language styles of expression of celebration and spirit which used in World cup’s official song lyrics? The research employs descriptive qualitative method, the researcher categorizes, describes, and analyzes the data systematically, factually, accurately in order to be able to answer the research questions proposed. The researcher uses Saussure’s theory about Semiotic (1983), Galperin’s (2010) and Qalyubi’s Stylistics (2009) to solve the problem presented in the research questions. The finding of this research is the expression of spirit which is more dominant than the expression of celebration. All the expression are evidenced by the two Saussure’s theories consisting of Signifier and Signified with Syntagmatic and Paradigmatic distinctions. In relation to the language styles of world cup’s official song expression of celebration and spirit, it is found that there are two styles; the first is rhetorical style which consists of Alliteration, Assonance, Asyndenton, Polysyndenton, Chiasmus, Ellipsis, Pleonasm, Tautology, and Hyperbole. Secondly, Simile and Metaphor as figurative style.
