Abstract

This thesis discusses the behavior of multiple personality disorder (MPD) by Kevin Wendell Crumb's character in the film Split by M. Night Shyamalan. The lifting of the phenomenon of multiple personality disorder which is rarely found in everyday life becomes an interesting thing from the film Split. This study has three objectives: (1) to describe the intrinsic elements of M. Night Shyamalan's film Split, (2) to describe the symptoms and causes of multiple personality disorder (MPD) experienced by Kevin Wendell Crumb's character by M. Night Shyamalan, and (3) describes the personality structure of Kevin Wendell Crumb and his alter-ego as sufferers of personality disorders in the film Split by M. Night Shyamalan according to Sigmund Freud. This research was conducted using the psychoanalytic approach of Sigmund Freud's perspective. The data source is taken from the film Split by M. Night Shyamalan in the form of screenshots and dialogue pieces. The researcher uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory and is assisted by other supporting theories. In analyzing, researchers used qualitative methods to analyze descriptively. The results of this study indicate that people with multiple personality disorder have various characters with different characters in each personality, and these personalities can be categorized according to who has a tendency to the id, ego and superego. The results of the study are as follows. First, the main character in the film Split is Kevin Wendell Crumb, Dr. Fletcher, Caey, Claire, Marcia, Barry, Dennis, Patricia, Hedwig and The Beast. Additional characters are Penelope Crumb, Uncle John, Jade, and Orwell. Split film has three general settings, namely place setting, time setting and social setting with the theme of mental illness. Second, the symptoms of multiple personality disorder experienced by Kevin in the form of having more than one different personality, two identities that repeatedly control the body, are unable to remember information, and the disorder is not due to a substance or general medical condition. Third, analysis of the personality structure of the id, ego, and superego represented by different alter-ego.
