Abstract

This study is intended to investigate challenges faced by English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in teaching writing through online learning. This research is also intended to find possible solutions to overcome EFL teachers’ challenges in teaching writing through online learning. The significance of this research is to acquire more information related to problems in teaching writing online from teachers’ perspectives. This study was designed as a qualitative method with a case study approach. This research is held at one of the senior high schools in Ciamis, West Java. The participants in this study are two English teachers. Observation and interviews were used for this study to get detailed and additional information about EFL teachers’ challenges in teaching writing through online learning and solutions to overcome those challenges. This study shows that there are several challenges faced by EFL teachers in teaching writing through online learning. Those challenges are students’ interests and motivation, communication and interaction between teachers and students, students’ English proficiency, accessibility, the use of platforms, and a learning environment. Furthermore, there are several solutions that teachers can apply to overcome those challenges. The solutions are: providing attention and motivation to students, applying effective teaching methods and techniques, choosing suitable and attractive learning platforms, preparing interesting learning materials, and giving simple tasks to students. In dealing with teaching writing in an online environment in this pandemic era, teachers must have challenges because the teaching process should be done online in a way that is genuinely different from the teaching process in the classroom. Besides, teachers might employ several solutions to overcome challenges in teaching writing through online learning.
