Abstract
This research explores EFL learners’ learning strategies in improving their listening skills. It identifies what learning strategies they used and understands why they used particular language learning strategies. This research was designed as a qualitative method with a case study approach. It involved 63 students of the fifth semester of the English Education Department in UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. To obtain the data, questionnaire and interview were used by the writer. The questionnaire was adopted from SILL (Oxford, 1990) to get the dominant language learning strategies used by the students. Moreover, the interview was conducted to get detailed information about the reason why the students used that language learning strategies. The finding concluded two items. First, there were no dominant frequency listening learning strategies used by the students of English Education Department. However, although included as medium frequency used strategy, Compensation Strategies were found as the high frequency used by the students which got 218 followed by Cognitive Strategies and Memory Strategies which are got the same value, 215. Second, the reason why most of the students used those strategies was because they were more enjoyable to learn through listening to the songs and watching movies. In conclusion, this research frames that most of language learning strategies were used in medium intensity by the students. They used watching movie and listening to the songs because they are more enjoyable and practical to do.
