Abstract

Every literary works has both content and form. This happens to the genre of poetry, as well which comprises various forms of poem. Among these forms, sonnet is unique, distinguished, and the most well-known poem. Sonnet is a poem containing fourteen lines. All of poets known to write many sonnets, Edmund Spenser was the most outstanding. Edmund Spenser’s love poems are written under Christian viewed about courtly love. Commonly, the concept of love and the Christian values expressed in each poem refer to the tradition of courtly love. Courtly love is pure and chastity, hence in a Christian values love sacred is connects to God. In the poem Spenser uses such figure of speech which is aimed to make clear the expressions an effect into the poem. Based on this consideration, the problem of this research focuses on two questions: (1) how does figurative language in the poem reflect the courtly love, and (2) how is the courtly love viewed in the perspective of Christian. Descriptive qualitative method is the method used in this research in which the researcher describes and identifies the courtly love and Christian viewed. Then, the data were taken from Edmund Spenser’s sonnets. The data were analyzed to answer the first and the second questions based on Richard Gill’s theory. One of the theories says that figure of speech in order to an effect or emotional intensity. The result of the analysis therefore is found that Edmund Spenser’s sonnets represent a courtly love and divine love value for the beauty and holy. God relationship both of man and woman follows a rules of God and rules of society to get a God’s favor and worship as his slaving to God. In some lines, love leads people to be aware of life values, to be proud, and keep moral values. Furthermore, he exposes the Christian views in his poems by using seven types of figurative language, they are: simile, metaphor, personification, symbol, hyperbole, irony, and metonymy.
