Abstract
Religion has a significant role in maintaining social relations and building reconciliation between mankind. Pluralism is one of the promising solutions to be applied, in order to realize a democratic human life and uphold human rights. In addition, Islam, through the Qur'an, also recognizes pluralism as a necessity. The research in this paper aims to review the thoughts of Abdulaziz Sachedina, one of the Muslim intellectual figures, especially regarding the concept of democratic pluralism initiated by him. This research is qualitative research based on methods of library research. This type of research uses data sourced from text or manuscripts in the form of books and articles related to the theme of the discussion. The research objectives can be generally divided into two things: (a) to describe the developmental stages of Abdulaziz Sachedina’s thoughts on democratic pluralism and (b) to understand the concept of democratic pluralism according to Abdulaziz Sachedina Through the discussions and research conducted, this study shows that the idea of democratic pluralism initiated by Sachedina is influenced by several factors, including the dark history of the classical Islamic political turbulence, the tendency to distort the sources of Islamic law, especially the Qurān and the Prophet's Hadith, and discrimination against individuals. religion against minority groups. Sachedina is influenced by some contemporary Muslim thinkers and scholars such as Ali Shariati, Murtadha Mutahhari, and Āyatullāh Khomeinī. This study also shows that Sachedina’s concept of democratic pluralism is based on an effort to combine the practice of democracy and pluralism in the life of the state In conclusion, Sachedina believes that pluralism serves to encourage all human beings to work together to bring peace and justice to the world, regardless of their particular religious affiliation. Thus, pluralism is not against the normative source of Islam. The concept of democratic pluralism can instill the principle of inclusiveness in contemporary heterogeneous community life, both culturally and religiously.
