Abstract

The violation of the cooperative principle is a violation of the rules contained in the cooperative principle. These rules are used to set speakers and listeners to be cooperative when they have a conversation. These rules are also used to avoid misunderstandings because the listeners cannot understand the meaning of the speaker's utterance. So that to make the conversation run well, the violations of the cooperative principle must be avoided by the speakers. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on this topic with research questions: 1. What maxims of cooperative principle are violated in William Donohue’s The Best Joke Book? 2. What functions of violation of cooperative principle are there in William Donohue’s The Best Joke Book? This study used qualitative method and the main theory used was the cooperative principle and implicature theory of Grice (1975). Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that 36 violations were found consisting of 7 types of maxim violations and the most commonly found was flouting the maxim of relation. In addition, there were also 10 types of maxim violation functions and the majority of these functions were to make a joke or to entertain. From the findings of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the violation of the maxims contained in William Donohue’s The Best Joke Book mostly occurs because of incongruence between the listener's expectations and the speaker's utterance. The utterances conveyed are not related to the information needed by the listeners. So there is no good communication between them. It also causes most of the cooperative principle violations to function as jokes or entertainment because the listeners perceive incongruences in the information received as part of the process of creating a joke.
