Abstract

This research focuses on finding and revealing the female masculinity that presented in a movie. The movie that chosen as the object of this research is Mad Max: Fury Road movie that released in 2015. This movie shows a female character who bring the concept of masculinity as a heroine of the story. Masculinity is a construction of gender identity aimed at male or men, but not all male will automatically bear the masculine predicate. Female must carry out strategies and action that reflect masculinity in their construction so that it is possible that masculinity can also be attached to female or women. Thus, this fact led the researcher proposed three problems, 1.) How is the heroine portrayed in Mad Max: Fury Road movie? 2.) How is the representation of heroine’s masculinity in Mad Max: Fury Road movie? 3.) What is the impact of heroine’s masculinity to the other character in Mad Max: Fury Road movie? In finding the result, this research identifying the heroine masculinity traits used Bem’s Sex Role Inventory of masculine theory by Sandra L Bem (1974) and the additon theory such as theory of masculinity from R.W Connell (2005) and female masculinity by Judith Halberstam (1998). The method of the research in this research is qualitative method. The researcher used the dialogues and scenes of the character as the data to get the result. As the result of research, the researcher found 12 masculinity traits represented by the heroine character in the movie, such as act as a leader, aggressive, ambitious, analitycal, assertive, athletic, dominant, has leadership abilities, make decisions easily, masculine, strong personality and willing to take risk. The conclusion in Mad Max: Fury Road movie can be understood that the masculinity can also be attached to female, and it also provide benefits for female but also male.
