Abstract
Translating is not an easy thing which can be done by anyone, even if for those who are learning translation or who have the educational background from English Education Department. Some people may assume that translation just needs the mastery of grammar; whereas, good translation not only requires good grammar, but also requires vocabulary enrichment and cultural knowledge from SL (Source Language) and TL (Target Language). One at least needs to master those aspects to be able to translate well, because they are the main things in translation. The aims of this research are (1) to analyze students’ difficulties in translating English descriptive text, (2) to find out the factors which make students difficult in translating the descriptive text, and (3) to find out how to overcome the problems of translating. The method used in this research is descriptive method by qualitative approach. The data for supporting the analysis was taken from test, questionnaire, and interview. Test was used to analyze students’ difficulties in translating descriptive text; whereas, questionnaire was used to find out the factors of students’ difficulties, and interview was used to find out how to overcome difficulties of translating by interviewing the lecturer of translation course. This research shows the nine students of English Education Department in the sixth semester have 60 difficulties in translating English descriptive text into Indonesian. The students from the high achieving have 7 difficulties either in lexical, grammatical, or stylistic aspect, and their translation is readable and understandable. On the other hand, the students from the mid achieving have 22 difficulties in those aspects. Their translation is nearly not understandable and readable. Furthermore, the students from the low achieving have 31 difficulties, and their translation is really not understandable and readable. So, the highest frequency is made by the low achieving students. The sixth semester students of English Education Department tend to be not able to change and use the constituent from source language into target language. It is proved that the students have 24 difficulties in lexical aspect. Meanwhile, they have 25 difficulties in grammatical aspect. On the other hand, they have 11 difficulties in stylistic aspect. Thus, the most difficulty gone through by students is grammatical aspect. Finally, this research provides recommendations related to reducing difficulties in translation and increasing the quality of translation.
