Abstract

In Indonesia, social media is one of the students' primary needs, and it is undeniable that social media use might influence them positively and negatively (Yohanna, 2020). However, coping with the influence of social media requires critical thinking because the information on social media contains hidden messages, and Indonesians seem to be easily deceived by the hoax. Furthermore, critical thinking allows students to increase their experience with social media and helps them become more aware and critical in producing their own media messages. For those reasons, this study aims to describe: (a) the English Education Department students' habits in using social media, (b) the English Education Department students' reflections toward truth-seeking on social media, (c) whether the English Education Department students' habit of using social media contributes to their critical thinking skills in truth-seeking on social media. The qualitative method and case study design were used in this research. Fifteen students from the third-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung were chosen as the participants in this research. Questionnaires about habits in using social media and truth-seeking reflections and document analyses of students' answers about habits in using social media and truth-seeking reflections were employed as the research instruments. In addition, this study obtained classroom observations to strengthen the questionnaire results regarding truth-seeking reflections. The results of this study reveal that the average student's habit of using social media is high and at the routine level habit. Students with low social media habits have a medium reflection of truth-seeking. In contrast, Students with high social media habit has a low reflection of truth-seeking. Students' habit of using social media has little influence on their truth-seeking reflections. Of the total 15 students studied, only two students were those whose habits of using social media affected their truth-seeking reflections. Furthermore, this study examines the 3rd-semester of English education students' habits and truth-seeking reflections in using social media. This case allows the future researcher to examine students of another level/year, other habits besides social media habits, and other critical thinking dispositions to get a different result.
