Abstract

Literature is an imagination, which produced in writing of the writer. Literature always has its own value in the form of symbols, without symbols there can be no literature or language. A symbol is a way of conveying a thought in the form of idea, as well as a vessel to channel the feelings of the writer without using explicit words but in another language which can be interpreted using various methods of literary criticism. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with an expressive approach. Hemingway's work as a literary work will be analyzed using symbolism theory because the work has symbolic values that can only be understood by studying the nature of the symbol itself. In the process of analyzing the data, symbols which associated wiith lost generation is found, such as Jake who has impotent disease from an injury he experienced during the first world war while Brett who has a very high lust, the behavior of characters who like blood brutality from bull-fighting, and a wine served on various breakfast menus that became a cultural feature of the people after the war. After analyzing Ernest Hemingway's work entitled The Sun Also Rises, it can be concluded that the symbols in his work have a high value related to the people who experienced the first world war known as the lost generation, which can only be understood by reading the whole novel as well as studying the nature of the symbol itself.
