Abstract

ENGLISH : This research is focused on analyzing the characterizations and conflicts in the novel Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincot. In literary works, especially in novels, characterization and conflict are important aspects, because these two aspects will make the story come alive. The aim of this research is; (1) to find the characterization of the characters in the novel Five Feet Apart (2) to reveal the conflicts present in the main character and other characters in the novel Five Feet Apart. The researcher uses Kenney's theory related to characterization, and Stanton's theory related to conflict. This study uses a qualitative method. The result of this research is that there are 59 quotations related to characterization of each character, the researcher finds 34 quotations related to characterization through the discursive method, and 25 quotations related to characterization through the dramatic method. There were also 15 quotes related to conflict in this story, namely 4 quotes on internal conflict including two quotes on the conflict that Stella Grant faced with herself, and two quotes on the conflict that Will Newman faced with himself. and 11 citations on external conflict. Two quotes on the conflict Stella Grant faced with nature, one quote on Stella Grant's conflict with her friend, four quotes on Stella Grant's conflict with Will Newman, one quote on Stella Grant's conflict with Poe, one quote on Stella Grant's conflict with Social, one quote on Barb's conflict with Stella Grant's parents, and one quote on Will Newman's conflict with his mother. This shows that the conflict that influences this story is the conflict faced by Stella Grant and Will Newman. Their cystic fibrosis disease becomes a conflict in Will Newman and Stella Grant's relationship as they have to be five feet apart, forever. INDONESIA : Penelitian ini difokuskan untuk menganalisis penokohan dan konflik dalam novel Five Feet Apart karya Rachael Lippincot. Dalam karya sastra, terutama pada novel karakterisasi dan konflik merupakan aspek penting, karena kedua aspek tersebut akan menyebabkan cerita menjadi hidup. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah; (1) untuk menemukan karakterisasi tokoh-tokoh dalam novel Five Feet Apart (2) untuk mengungkapkan conflict yang hadir pada tokoh utama dan tokoh lainnya dalam novel Five Feet Apart. Peneliti menggunakan teori Kenney terkait karakterisasi, dan teori Stanton terkait konflik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya 59 kutipan terkait karakterisasi yang mengungkapkan bagaimana karakterisasi setiap tokoh dalam cerita ini, peneliti menemukan 34 kutipan terkait karakterisasi melalui metode discursive, dan 25 kutipan terkait karakterisasi melalui metode dramatic. Ditemukan pula 15 kutipan terkait konflik dalam cerita ini, yaitu 4 kutipan pada konflik internal diantaranya dua kutipan pada konflik yang dihadapi Stella Grant dengan dirinya sendiri, dan dua kutipan pada konflik yang dihadapi Will Newman dengan dirinya sendiri. dan 11 kutipan pada konflik eksternal. Dua kutipan pada konflik yang dihadapi Stella Grant dengan alam, satu kutipan pada konflik Stella Grant dengan temannya, empat kutipan pada konflik Stella Grant dengan Will Newman, satu kutipan pada konflik Stella Grant dengan Poe, satu kutipan pada konflik Stella Grant dengan Sosial, satu kutipan pada konflik Barb dengan orantua Stella Grant, dan satu kutipan pada konflik Will Newman dengan ibunya. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa konflik yang berpengaruh pada cerita ini yaitu konflik yang dihadapi Stella Grant dengan Will Newman. Penyakit fibrosis kistik yang mereka miliki menjadi konflik dalam hubungan Will Newman dan Stella Grant karena mereka harus terpisah sejauh lima langkah kaki, selamanya.
