Abstract

This present research was conducted in order to find out the improvement in students listening comprehension. The Background of this research was based on a situation that occurred in the classroom of eighth-grade students at MTS Mimha. They had listening problems, a lack of vocabulary. As a consequence, this study concentrated on how to improve students' listening comprehension after being given a vocabulary preparation strategy. This research used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design. The sample of this research was 16 students of class 8B that was chosen using purposive sampling. Moreover, this research used pre-test and post-test as data collection instruments. The result of this study found that the average score of students’ listening comprehension increased. The T-paired test result shows that the Significance (2-tailed) is 0.001 < 0.005, indicating that there is a substantial improvement, and the N-gain result is 0.76, indicating that it is highly significant. In conclusion, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted because tcount = 16.304 > ttable 2.131, indicating a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. It means that there are improvements in students’ listening comprehension after being given vocabulary preparation. This study concludes that the strategy of vocabulary preparation helped improve students' listening comprehension. As evidenced by the student's listening comprehension score, vocabulary preparation can be highly advantageous. Vocabulary preparation can help students understand the speaker's message and answer the question more effectively. Vocabulary preparation helps students recognize words.
