Abstract

Human beings are born with a variety of obsession and desire. One of them that the most dominant is desire for power. Then it has brought many changes in our world over the centuries. The war has become familiar as the effects of the desire of power. It is not something new but it has been happening for a long time. Therefore it is hoped that with the study of the power hegemony in research under the title of Power Hegemony in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The study focused on issues related to the hegemony in the drama and the form of resistance to power hegemony by using Gramsci's hegemonic theory and literary sociology approach. It can reveal the forms of hegemony which occurs mainly within a state power, and describes the form of resistance which happens to the power hegemony that exists. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The source of this data is William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar drama. Data were obtained by reading and writing techniques. Datas were analyzed by qualitative descriptive technique. The results of the study as follows. First, the hegemony in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar drama is a hegemony that occurs within a country that makes the two hegemonic regions of civil society and political society with different hegemonic forms. Hegemony that occurs in civil society there are being the ruler of Rome, welcoming party for hero, affecting trust, moral leadership. While the hegemony that occurs within the political society there are indict the subordinate, be warry of political opponets, entrusting an intellectual as right hand. Second, the forms of resistance to hegemony in this drama there are two types of non-violent resistance and destructive resistance. The non-violent resistance forms include blocking Julius Caesar's will, self-irony Cassius & Brutus and lupercal party intervention while destructive resistance forms include the pogrom of Julius Caesar and the war of phillipi. From the result of finding, the writer concluded that the hegemony of power that occurred in imperial Rome at that time was decadent hegemony. This is because the affiliation and support of the people of Rome was not accompanied by political affiliation. So the resistance that emerged was only from the political society that cons at the leadership of Julius Caesar.
