Abstract

Translation is the transfering of one language to another language. To gain knowledge of a language requires knowledge of source language and target language. Good language is language that is spoken well, politely and does not offend other people. Meanwhile, swear words are used to berate or ridicule someone. But there are some swear words used as emphasis to express yourself. However, it goes back to when and where the word is used. The researcher wants to analyze the types of swear words in Indonesian subtitles, and the English swear words that often appear in the film Running sacred. Researcher used qualitative research methods and descriptive approaches for this research. The researcher used Hughes' theory (1991) to answer the first and second problem questions, then Newmark's theory (1988) to answer the third question. The results of the study show that there are types of swear words in Indonesian subtitle and English spoken, and how these swear words are translated. The types of swear words found in Indonesian texts are (1 data) anatomical terms, (1 data) mental retardation, (1 data) animal terms, (13 data) general terms. Then the types of swear words in English are (4 data) genital terms, (4 data) anatomical terms, (4 data) excretory terms (1 data) mental retardation, (1 data) animal terms, (16 data) general terms. Methods of translation (8 data) word for word translation, (14 data) literal translation, (11 data) faithful translation, (10 data) semantic translation, (8 data) communicative translation, (29 data) idiomatic translation. The most common type of swear words found is general terms, both in Indonesian and English subtitles. Then the translation method used is idiomatic translation.
