Abstract
The experience of a teacher in instructing speaking skills in communication holds significant value in facilitating the teaching and learning process. The research was designed to discover the role of teacher's experience in deciding instructional practices. Specifically, this research purposed: to explore the teacher's prior experience in teaching speaking using English conversation, the strategy used by teacher in teaching English conversation, and the student's responses about the strategy used by teacher in teaching speaking using conversation. This research is a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants in this study were 27 students of class 8C and one English teacher of MTs Miftahul Falah Bandung. The sample was selected by purposive sampling. Data were obtained from interviews, observation and questionnaires. Data analysis is presented by describing the results of the observation, interview transcriptions, and questionnaire responses. The study results showed that the teacher’s prior experience using English conversation influence their instructional practices and strategies in teaching speaking. Moreover, the teacher used pair work as strategy in teaching speaking using conversation. While, in each meeting the teacher applied the strategy in various ways. In addition, the student's responses towards the strategy used by teacher were that their English cognitive improved after the teacher applied pair work strategy. This was because the students were enjoyed learning English using conversation in the pair work. Moreover, they acquired motivation and expectations to improve their speaking skills while participating the speaking lesson using English conversation.
