Abstract
Pragmatics, is the study of how language is used in context to convey meaning beyond the literal interpretations of words and sentences. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including the speech act. Speech act is a specific aspect of pragmatics that was developed by philosophers like J.L. Austin and later elaborated by John Searle. It focuses on the idea that when people speak, they are not just conveying information, but they are also performing actions which include the directive speech acts. Directive speech acts is types of speech acts that aim to give instructions, requests, or invitations to listeners to do something. It means directive utterances are those in which the speaker tries to get the addressee to perform some act or refrain from performing an act. The specialty of a directive speech act lies in its ability to change the listener's behavior according to the speaker's intention. Therefore, the researcher feels interested because in terms of the object itself, the theme is war action, where the character's utterances are more commanding and needs to do research on this topic with research questions: 1) To describe what types of directive speech acts are used in the Top Gun Maverick movie object. 2) To explain how the types of directive speech acts are used in the Top Gun Maverick movie object. The qualitative descriptive method was a method used by researcher to find research results and the main theory used to analyze the data were from of Searle J.R (1979) and Yule G (1996). Based on data analysis, the findings showed that the types of directive speech acted found were questions (7 data), requirements (6 data), request (5 data) and prohibitive (5 data). Meanwhile, how the directive speech acted was used was by advise (9 data) and mandative (7 data). From the findings of the data analysis, it can be concluded that every directive speech act that character says has its purpose. The equation of the whole utterance is that it requires a response in the form of action. Directive speech is strongly influenced by the context of circumstances and emotions so the response that gives follows words and intentions on the situation. Keywords: direct speech act, movie, Top Gun Maverick.
