Abstract

ENGLISH : This study examines the mood types used and the interpersonal meaning that is realized in Joe Biden’s speech entitled “Lowering Costs for American Families”. The text of this speech discuss the solution for the problem in American Families. In addition, another interesting thing is that Joe Biden is a president who loves his citizens. The purpose of this study is to describe the mood types that used, and to explore the interpersonal meaning realized in the speech delivered by Joe Biden. The methodology used in this research is qualitative text analysis. The main source of data in this study is the speech that conveyed by Joe Biden on whitehouse.gov. It is the official website from The White House owned by the United States Government. This research focuses on clauses that has been selected using simple random sampling method. Data analysis used the following steps: first, reading the text, sorting and arranging the clauses, analyzing clauses based on mood-residue and mood types, describes the interpersonal meaning of each clauses based on the basic speech role. The final step, the writer concludes the results of this study. In conducting this research, the author uses the Halliday theory that described by Linda Gerot and Peter Wignell (1994). The results of data analysis show that there are 3 types of mood used in the speech of the “Lowering Costs for American Families”, namely declarative mood, interrogative mood, and imperative mood. There are 48 clauses of declarative mood, 1 clause of imperative mood and 1 clause of interrogative mood. The interpersonal meaning in this speech are 48 giving information, 1 demanding information, and 1 asking goods. The conclusion that the writer concluded in this study is the most dominant mood types that used in the speech is unmarked declarative mood. It used by Joe Biden to give information for his citizens that the government struggle to lowering the costs, spesifically the costs of health insurance and drugs. The most dominant subject is in the word ‘we’. It is used to emphasize that the actions taken by the government are actions taken collectively with the American people. This is a way to communicate that the government and the public are working together to achieve a common goal, which is lowering the cost of living for American families. Then, the most dominant of residue elements is complement. In his speech. Joe Biden has given a lot of information. It is conveyed by Joe Biden so as the audience know the results of what the government struggled and what the government planned for the future. INDONESIA : Penelitian ini mengkaji jenis-jenis mood dan interpersonal meaning dalam teks pidato Joe Biden yang berjudul “Lowering Costs for American Families". Teks pidato ini membahas solusi untuk masalah yang dialami keluarga Amerika. Selain itu, hal menarik lainnya adalah Joe Biden merupakan seorang presiden yang mencintai warganya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan jenis-jenis mood yang digunakan dan untuk mengeksplorasi makna interpersonal yang terdapat dalam teks pidato yang disampaikan oleh Joe Biden. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis teks kualitatif. Sumber data utama dalam penelitian ini adalah teks pidato yang disampaikan oleh Joe Biden di whitehouse.gov. yang merupakan situs web resmi dari The White House yang dimiliki oleh pemerintah Amerika Serikat. Penelitian ini fokus pada klausa-klausa yang telah dipilih dengan menggunakan metode simple random sampling. Analisis data menggunakan langkah-langkah berikut: pertama, membaca teks, mengurutkan dan menyusun klausa-klausa, menganalisis klausa-klausa berdasarkan mood-residue dan mood types, menjelaskan interpersonal meaning dari masing-masing klausa berdasarkan basic speech role. Langkah terakhir, penulis menyimpulkan hasil dari penelitian ini. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teori Halliday yang dideskripsikan oleh Linda Gerot dan Peter Wignell (1994). Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 3 mood types yang digunakan dalam pidato “Lowering Costs for American Families” yaitu declarative mood, imperative mood, dan interrogative mood. Terdapat 48 klausa declarative mood, 1 klausa imperative mood, dan 1 klausa interrogative mood. Interpersonal meaning dalam pidato ini ada 48 giving information, 1 demanding information, dan 1 asking goods. Kesimpulan yang penulis simpulkan dalam penelitian ini adalah mood types yang paling dominan digunakan dalam pidato adalah unmarked declarative mood. Hal ini digunakan oleh Joe Biden untuk memberikan informasi kepada warganya bahwa pemerintah sedang berjuang untuk menurunkan biaya, khususnya biaya asuransi kesehatan dan obat-obatan. Subject yang paling dominan ada pada kata ‘We’. Hal ini digunakan untuk menekankan bahwa tindakan yang diambil oleh pemerintah adalah tindakan yang diambil secara kolektif dengan rakyat Amerika. Ini adalah cara untuk menyampaikan bahwa pemerintah dan masyarakat bekerja sama untuk mencapai tujuan bersama, yaitu menurunkan biaya hidup keluarga Amerika. Kemudian residue element yang paling dominan adalah complement. Dalam pidatonya, Joe Biden telah memberikan banyak informasi, hal tersebut disampaikan Joe Biden agar masyarakat mengetahui hasil perjuangan pemerintah dan apa yang direncanakan pemerintah ke depan.
