Abstract

The approach used is an objective approach and used a comparative method, where the data is analyzed by descriptive qualitative approach and uses structural analysis theory. This research aims to describe 1). similarities and differences in the main characters in the fairy tales of The Two Sisters and the fairy tale Bawang Merah Bawang Putih. 2) Setting that builds in the fairy tales of The Two Sisters and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih. The data sources are two fairy tales from different countries entitled The Two Sisters from England, and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih from Indonesia. And as a result of this research, researchers found that the similarities shown are in the characters of the two sisters in stories that are contradictory to each other. Bawang Putih is described as a character who is gentle, kind and loving, the same as one sibling in The Two Sisters is described as kind and helpful. While the other Bawang Merah is depicted as a character who is arrogant, greedy and jealous, the same as one sister is described as not having a kind heart. In terms of setting, researchers found that the time setting for the two stories tends to be the same, that is, it is not specific and only includes 'long ago'. The setting of place in both stories uses the same rural setting and the second person's house where the conflict occurs. And in the two fairy tales have a similar social background, this can be concluded because the two characters are sisters who are depicted as having opposite characteristics. This is certainly influenced by social background may shape the perspective of both characters.
