Abstract
This research aims to analyze the elements of tragedy-comedy and the tragic-comedy represent Eastern culture in each adaptation. The data of this study were taken from fifth-semester students majoring in English Literature at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung on the final project of the Further Studies in Drama course in 2023, namely Keluarga Cemari, Loka Bacacahan, and Anak Haram, as well as the original script, Buried Child by Sam Shepard. The researcher used a qualitative structural approach and comparative method to analyze and compare the data because this research analyzes the elements of literary works, namely plot and characterization. To analyze the elements of tragedy-comedy, the researcher used the theory of plot and characterization from Pickering and Hoeper in the Concise Companion to Literature (1981). The results showed that Buried Child uses a forward plot and only uses three plot elements, namely Exposition, Complication, and Crisis. This inspired the adapters to do the same thing so that the three adaptation scripts consisting of Keluarga Cemari, Loka Bacacahan, and Anak Haram use the same plot, which is a forward plot with three plot elements and a tragedy-comedy element that can be seen from the differences in each script. In addition, the three adaptation scripts have imperfect cultural adaptation and have many shortcomings because they still retain many symbols of Western culture. This also affects the course of the story due to the lack of synchronization between the cultures used. In addition, cultural adaptation also affects the balance of tragedy-comedy elements.
