Abstract
This study aims to determine the representation of American women's beauty standards through beauty pageants in the America such as Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Muslimah USA. Beauty pageants are competitions that focus on assessing the beauty of contestants in terms of physical and psychological aspects. This beauty contest is one of the media that indirectly displays women's beauty standards. That is why the researcher are interested in examining the representation of American women's beauty standards through beauty pageants in America. The reason why the researcher chose America is because this country is one of the countries that is the benchmark for women's fashion and beauty around the world. According to the news site Insider, America is the country that has won the most Miss Universe titles in the world with nine titles. So it is not surprising that many people follow the fashion and beauty of this country. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data or research objects in this study are photos and captions that the researcher took from Instagram. There are three photos and two captions that the researcher studied in this study. The theory used in this research is Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Barthes' theory is an advanced theory from Ferdinand de Saussure which examines signifier and signified. Barthes then developed the meaning of signs at the second level, namely connotation and myth. Therefore, Barthes' theory includes the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. By using Barthes' theory, the researcher tries to determine the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth in photos and captions taken from Instagram. This analysis was done to find out the beauty standards that apply to American beauty contests. After the myth of beauty standards was found, the researcher then tried to connect it with the beauty standards of women in America. Based on the results of the analysis, the representation of American women's beauty standards through beauty pageants is classified based on two types of beauty, namely outer beauty and inner beauty. First, beauty standards based on outer beauty include skin color, body image, makeup, and hairstyle. Second, beauty standards based on inner beauty include religious attitudes, optimism, productivity, and leadership.
